  • Any therapy relationship will begin with the intake process, which is where you will be asked a series of questions about what brought you to seek services, along with general information about your background. For some, the initial appointments can bring a sense of relief, as if you are finally getting things off your chest. For others, it can feel challenging to talk about things that may feel private. It is understandable that everyone comes in with a unique history, and April McCarthy is committed to making sure each client feels safe and supported through each step of the process. You can provide as much or as little detail as you feel comfortable sharing. It is a first encounter after all, and it takes time to build trust with your therapist.

  • Just as every therapy relationship is unique, every parent-provider relationship is unique as well. Upon intake, this is a great opportunity to discuss not only what brought your family to therapy, but also what your goals and expectations are for communication and collaboration with the therapist. This will help April McCarthy work with you to establish a schedule that is unique to your family’s needs and circumstances that will be most supportive.

  • Sessions with April McCarthy are about 50 minutes in duration. She typically meets with clients weekly, although there may be cases where more or less frequent sessions are indicated; this will be discussed during the intake process. Duration of treatment widely varies depending on your treatment goals and may change over time. Some clients find that a few sessions help alleviate their distress, some clients choose to continue therapy longer-term, and some fall somewhere in between. Treatment duration will be a joint decision and continued conversation between you and April McCarthy as the therapy progresses.
